Only a couple days left before Christmas. The exams are done for the semester, holidays are here where much needed family time and relaxing await you.

Following suit from last's years Christmas break to do listKristine D'Arbelles and Julia Kent decided to share some ideas on what young professionals should be doing over the holiday break.

No surprise, the first thing on our hosts' lists is reading. Some of our listeners gave some excellent suggestions like:

We also talk about the importance of pop culture in a PR and communications world. That is why Kristine finally gave in and is reading the Hunger Games. With millions of books sold across the world, it is bound to be an important reference for this generation.

But almost as important as pop culture, is the classics. So take the time this holiday break to catch up on 1984 or To Kill a Mockingbird.

Split your reading in two this holiday, between fiction and a terchnical book that might help build a skill in PR and communications. Here is a good list put together by Result Map.

This week, Kristine D'Arbelles and Julia Kent talk about the post-PC world - the world of mobile. Our topic idea was fuelled by a Globe and Mail article called We’re post-PC and mobile-everything, but where’s the love? written by Navneet Alang.

Kristine and Julia compare the companies they work for. The Canadian Automobile Association integrates mobile in a lot of their strategies, while MHPM doesn't. However, that doesn't mean one is better than the other. We discuss how different organizations have very different audiences, which warrant different communications strategies.

Although mobile may not be mandatory for all audiences out there, as we are becoming an increasingly mobile world, it should always be in the back of our minds.

This week, Kristine D'Arbelles and Julia Kent talk about the PR chaos surrounding the mayor of Toronto, Canada's largest city, Rob Ford.

We explore the controversial drug videos and press conferences, to the puzzling amount of Rob Ford supporters. We ask ourselves, who is running his PR strategy and what is their plan?

Then we play Julia's favourite game: what would be your advice if you worked for Rob Ford. And Julia's only rule was that you cannot say "I Quit".

A nice recap of the situation was nicely captured by Bill Walker, general manager of the PR firm Fleishman-Hillard's Toronto office, in a CBC article:

"It just continues to be one of the most unconventional and mind-boggling communications strategies that I've ever seen in my life," says Bill Walker, general manager of the PR firm Fleishman-Hillard's Toronto office.

"I don't know how in one day you go from your brother demanding that the police chief resign, to you admitting that you smoked crack cocaine, and you calling a press conference where everybody thought you were going to resign and then, instead, announcing that you are going to run again in the next election for mayor — and you're not leaving.

"It just indicates complete chaos to me."

This week, Kristine D'Arbelles and Julia Kent are actually sitting face to face for the recording. You can just hear the excitement in their voices. A more human connecting recording deserves a chat about being human. How to be a social human organization to be exact.

A couple of days ago, Gini Dietrich posted an article about how Home Depot tried to mitigate a social media crisis. Although it may seem that they followed the step-by-step process of how to get out of a social media crisis, the company left one tiny factor out: they forgot to be human.

This conversation leads Kristine and Julia to remind young professionals of the importance of being a human behind your social media accounts.

We also debate what is considered a fireable offence. Home Depot ends up terminating the social media agency and the employee who sent the Tweet. We all make mistakes, did Home Depot go to far? Julia shares with us some social media bloopers of her own.

This week, Kristine D'Arbelles (no, this is not a new host - remember, Kristine got married) and Julia Kent talk about peer pressure.

Often times as young professionals we feel intimidated in a meeting room with senior managers and vice presidents. When asked our opinion, we might bite our tongue and go with the room to please everyone. However, this is not always good for you and your career, or even for the company you work for.

We got this week's topic idea from Big Leap Creative in their article titled What 5th Grade Peer Pressure Can Teach Us About Achieving SuccessLisa Gerber shares the story of how her sister went against her whole classroom because she knew she was right.

She was proud of herself back then for taking the risk and being the only one in the room to raise her hand for the right answer. It’s too bad, she said, that she only did it 80 percent of the time, but she couldn’t muster the nerve all five times. It’s much easier to go with the majority and she had run out of energy.

Kristine and Julia talk about stricking the balance between observing from your senior managers and sharing your opinion when you feel they are wrong. We have to be honest with ourselves, we are less experienced, so we might be wrong in our thinking and trusting those with more experience can pay off. However, a fresh pair of eyes sometimes is exactly what a communications project needs.

It is important to find the right balance and that is why we recommend finding a work place that allows you to freely share your opinion and ideas as well as explains why your ideas might or might not work.

Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent are back at it this week. What does it take to succeed in the PR Fashion Industry? Since joining the Ottawa Fashion Week (OFW) team in 2011, Operations Manager Payton Kennedy has seen many changes in the PR Coordinator role. 
One thing remains true: the position involves an industrious character. As the summer comes to a close and a new semester begins, students start gearing up for the back to school rush and prepare for a successful year of studies. For the month of September, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent, hosts of Young PR Pros, have teamed up with the uOttawa PR Association (uOPRA) and executive member Sharon Cheung to discuss PR in four industries within the profession. Take uOPRA to Work Day is a four-part podcast series that serves as a resource for better understanding the industries of technology, lifestyle and entertainment, communications agencies and government relations.

This week, Kristine, Julia and Sharon kick off the series with MediaMiser’s HR Manager, Shirley Schiavo, who will be giving some insight into the recruitment process and important skills and experience. Located here in Ottawa, MediaMiser specializes in media monitoring and analysis. MediaMiser’s software collects and manages news coverage from traditional (newspaper, television) and social media (Facebook, Twitter) sources. Shirley, who graduated from Public Relations at Algonquin College, has a strong understanding of what the hybrid tech and PR company is seeking in new team members.

As Take uOPRA to Work Day spotlights four industries within PR, we ask Shirley about major differences between PR in technology and PR in other industries such as Fashion, Music and Government.

This week, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent talk about Gini's Dietrich blog post about Six Tips for Better Public Speaking.

Julia starts with her pet peeve: death by power point. Julia stresses the important of less text and more images on your slides. Kristine shares her advice that each slide should represent one idea. She encourages professionals to look at their presentation and figure out what the main messages, or the key take aways. Then make sure to have a slide per take away. It is okay to have only three slides for a 45 minute presentation.

And, when thinking of take aways, Gini Dietrich encourages professionals to think in tweets when they present. Julia says she still remembers key take aways from Gini's presentation about Marketing in the Round because her messages were clear and concise.

And finally, Kristine and Julia discussed the importance of a title and a good description for young or young at heart professionals doing presentations at events or conferences.

What if the rules we've been taught to live and build our careers and companies around were no longer valid?

A heavy and scary question for some, that could mean the complete overhaul of how we look at life as we know it. This week, Young PR Pros hosts, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent, explore the new life rules with Mitch Joel. Mitch is the author of Control Alt Delete: Reboot your business, Reboot your life, Your future depends on it. Mitch, named the Rock Star of Digital Marketing and one of North America's leading digital visionaries, is also the president of Twist Image, one of the largest independent digital marketing agencies in North America.

We start the episode off by taking about how the way we work and do business is moving faster than most of us can follow. Mitch offers his insight in to how we can navigate and adapt to the fundamental changes in society today.

As a follow up to a question Gini Dietrich asked in an Inside PR episode, where Mitch shared a story about a professional who had it all - the American/Canadian dream - yet she was not happy, Kristine asks if the "American" or in our case the "Canadian" dream dead, what should young professionals do when starting out their careers? Mitch offers some great advice, most notably, don't think lineally. In today's career landscape, the average professional might have five to six career changes in a lifetime. This should not be scary, says Mitch, but an exciting new way to experience lots of different opportunities.

Then we switch gears a bit, Julia asks Mitch about the experience of writing a book. A fascinating tale of unique surprises and hard work. However, Mitch reminds us that any project worth doing, is a project that should be daunting. And if you set yourself up for success, you will be successful.

We end the show with a discussion about the importance of networking and being part of a professional association. Julia asks about Mitch's involvement in the Canadian Marketing Association. Mitch is a huge advocate of getting engaged in your community and your industry. He reminds young professionals to go in to an association not with the mentality of what will "I" get out of this, but what can I bring to the association and to the people I meet.

This week, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent welcome William Johnson back to the show as a guest host to talk about morning routines.

William, or better known as @socialeccentric on Twitter, surveyed more than 20 young professionals in the Ottawa, Canada area and asked how the best of us start off are days.

The Results

About 30 per cent of the respondents reported being up by 6:00 a.m. or earlier, as a result of an alarm or perhaps a pet or a significant other. William was surprised to hear that a plurality of them workout first, before anything else when they wake up, including Kristine (when she is not too tired). Julia and Will think Kristine is just crazy!

Consuming coffee, walking dogs, and checking emails and social media also rank first in many of the task lists. Over half made note of specific breakfast dishes they prepare, with eggs, fruit, yogurt and smoothies listed as the food items of choice. And 35 per cent claimed to check their work email before they actually get to work. And as expected over 60 per cent consume coffee or tea.

What is the proper way to wake up then?

The discussion during this week's podcast truly revealed that everyone is different. Despite the countless articles out there that talk about how the right way to start your day and how the top executives wake up, the important thing to remember is to think about your energy and figure out what makes you productive.

Will says that the best way to figure out the routine right for you is to test things out. Luckily, the average person has more than 25,000 mornings to test wake up routines.

This week, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent talk about the power of body language and how it can shape who you are.

We pull this week's topic from a TED Talk by Amy Cuddy a social psychologist and a professor and researcher at Harvard Business School, where she studies how nonverbal behavior and snap judgments affect people from the classroom to the boardroom.

Body language is a powerful thing, says Cuddy. The facial expression of a politician can affect 72 per cent of his or her vote outcomes, emoticons used in online negotiation can lead you to claim more value from that conversation if used properly. But more importantly, our body language affects how we feel about ourselves and then reflects that image back to the world.

First we discuss how your body posture during an interview can make or break your chances of getting a job.

We then discuss Cuddy's concept of power posing. In her TED Talk, she talks about how there is a slight gender gap when it comes to nonverbal cues. Cuddy watches her students walk in to class and see the men try to occupy a lot of space, and stick their hand way up in the air, while the women calapse on themselves. This attributed directly to their marks - those who showed strong power posing had higher marks. So Cuddy asked herself, if you change your posture and fake your posture to a more power posing posture, will your brain interpret that as confidence?

To test her hypothesis, Cuddy had people come in and for two minutes sit in a power posing position. The individual's testosterone level - which is the chemical in your body that increases when you feel more confident or powerful - increased by 20%. Just by sitting in a certain position.

Kristine and Julia wrap up the show by sharing how their posture helps their self-esteem. Julia mentions that it is more than just posture, but there are pre-interview routines you can follow to help you increase your confidence before an interview.

The article entitled Communications Strategists Deliberated on 60 Million in Cuts at Environment Canada, talks about how communicators were invited to attend a c-suite and major business meeting in order to be better prepared.

First Kristine and Julia talk about the positives of having communicators in these meetings. They also discuss how young communicators can work their way in to these meetings.

“This allowed an analysis of communication issues, stakeholder reactions and public perception to be weighed during the consideration of each and every proposal and had the added advantage of having communications staff familiar with the proposals, and ready to hit the ground running once the decisions were announced.”

Then, Kristine reacts to the negative stereotypes of the industry and gives her rebuttal to how some believe that communicators are simple there to communicate the decision and have no place in contributing to the business decisions.

“That sounds a bit backwards to me,” said Gary Corbett, president of the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada, which represents about 60,000 government scientists and professionals. “It’s wrong for communications people to be involved in deciding what decisions to make. Communications people are there to communicate the decisions after they’re made. It seems the government is just being political rather than (doing) what’s in the best interests of Canadians.”

This week, hosts Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent talk about the ways the job search has changed. Your parents may have instilled job searching lessons in you as a child, but some of those lessons no longer apply.

In a Huffington Post article written by Joshua Waldman called 10 Ways The Job Search Has Changed, it says job searching has changed dramatically over the past few years. If you want to succeed, you’ll have to take a much different approach than you did previously.

Kristine and Julia comment on a few points in the article:

  1. Google has replaced the resumé. SEO is more important today than it ever was. Kristine shares some tricks on how you can make sure you look good on Google.
  2. A summary of your work history is enough. As mentioned in episode 53, there are 2000-3000 new PR and communications graduates every year in Canada. It is a competitive world out there, so summarize in a cover letter or at the top of your résumé why you should be the chosen candidate.
  3. Relationships come first, resumés second. Julia reminds the audience that the majority of PR/communications/marketing jobs are achieved by who you know and not what you know. Young PR Pros gives a bunch of useful tips on networking and building relationships in episode 48.
  4. Employers only care about what they want. Kristine reminds young pros your job search is not about you, but about the company. The best way to get a job is to find out what the company's business goals are and show how you could fulfill that need.
  5. Work gaps aren't big problems. Julia shares her work background to demonstrate that a diverse background with a few breaks can actually be good for your job search.
  6. And finally, Kristine errs on the side of caution when reading number 3: social proof is a must. Although it is nice to have letters of recommendations, Kristine doesn't beieve in LinkedIn endorsements, she shares her reasons and gives young pros other alternatives to social proof.

Hosts, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent, are really excited about this week's topic. Julia introduces this week's topic: a TED Talk by Meg Jay called Why 30 is not the new 20.

Lately it feels as if 25 is just a bit too young to get serious. In her psychology practice, her book The Defining Decade, clinical psychologist Meg Jay suggests that many twentysomethings have been caught in a swirl of hype and misinformation about what Time magazine calls the "Me Me Me Generation." The rhetoric that "30 is the new 20," she suggests, trivializes what is actually the most transformative period of our adult lives.

  1. Forget about having an identity crisis, get identity capital. Do something that adds value to who you are and make every experience count.
  2. Don' fall in to the urban tribe. Avoid hanging out with the same people all the time, expand your network. She says weak ties are where real opportunities arise in life. A weak tie is a friend of friend of friend. As Young PR Pros has preached in the past, this strengthens the message of the importance of networking and building a strong network of valuable friends and prospective employers. Remember half of new jobs are never posted.
  3. Pick your family. You can't pick your mother, father, brother or sister, but you can pick your close friends and spouse. Jay says uses the analogy of musical chairs. When you are twentysomething dating is fun, everyone is just running around. But when you hit 30 or 35, people start sitting down and often people will sit in the closest chair to them because it is convenient. Don't set yourself up to have an empty chair. Each relationship you choose, each job you choose, make them count. You don't have to have all the answers and you might make mistakes, but your twentysomething years are the time to have those "aha" moments.

This week, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent answer a big question: how can young PR professionals get rid of any negative PR stereotypes.

A question, Kristine asked while she attended Conversations 2013, the CPRS National Conference in Gatineau. As you go through the lessons below click on the bold links. they will direct you to the full interview on YouTube. 

Here is what she learned:

  • Evan Solomon, a reporter by trade, reminded us that the PR industry lacks authenticity. Lack of authenticity results in mistrust. He says we need to get that trust back by being spontaneous and breaking free from canned messages.

On that note, Kristine reminds our readers it is all about building relationships and makes reference to an article called Media Relations 2.0. The standard news release is dying, build a relationship with journalists instead.

  • Dan Tisch says we too often define ourselves as the things we do - i.e. media relations, social media - when we should be looking at the value of what we do. Dan also encourages young pros to make business literacy your number one goal in your education and training. Understanding the business of your organization will help you understand the value PR brings to an organization.
  • Terry Fallis quotes the first line in his new book, Up and Down, "Welcome to the dark side," says the agency manager to the new recruit. Terry says the image that PR is the dark side still exists and encourages young pros to not just do PR for their companies, but for the PR industry as well.
  • Ira Basen, a producer with CBC, says we have to find out what the negative sterotype is and thens imply stop doing it. but in general, he says we should be truthful and honest. Ira also reminds young pros that this is a big burden to carry on one person's shoulders. We shouldn't be responsible for the industry's reputation, just our own. If everyone worries about their own reputation and makes an effort to do good PR, then the industry will grow.
  • Alexandra Samuel makes reference to a familiar idea: breaking down the silos. She says young pros enter the work force in a silo - the social media expert. But social media is more than just a job these days, it is our entire industry. She encourages young professionals who get stuck in the social media role to remind your superiors you are more than just a tweeter. You are building relationships.
  • To finish off the conference, CPRS held a panel called the Future of PR. The panel included Dan Tisch, Jean Valin, Stephanie Lawrence and Vince Power and was moderated by Bruce MacLellan. Here are a few comments the panel made about improving the industry's stereotypes:
    • Redefine what we do from a service to value. We look after the company's reputation, that is valuable.
    • Reflect the values of an organization through our communications. PR can be the gateway to showcasing the value of trusting an orgyanization.
    • Call out bad practice. Don't let people get away with bad PR, because it is not PR, it is just lies.
    • Remind the world that PR does more than just communications for an organization, but often we are the ones behind the corporate social responsibility initiatives, helpiong local and global communities.
    • Be part of a professional organization where we can work together towards international standards. Everyone in a professional organization such as CPRS or IABC should hold each other accountable.

Kristine and Julia quickly see that finding a mentor resembles a love story. You will know when your mentor is "the one" and you need to balance the relationship by giving as much as you take.

Kristine believes cold calling companies to set up informational interviews are a good way to get your foot in the door. Julia, however, believes there are more personal ways to makes connections than cold calling.

Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent switch gears this week to talk about Facebook identity theft.

Gini Dietrich postsed on her popular blog SpinSucks.com a story her friend that experienced Facebook photo theft. It is quite simple. Someone steals photo off a Facebook profile, then creats a new Facebook profile and makes up a fake name. It doesn’t stop there. The Facebook profile then can like groups and pages such as guns and racist groups (even going as far as using really awful racial slurs).

Now, let this story not be a horror story that prompts you to shut down Facebook, but rather a cautionary tale that opens your eyes to some of the potential dangers in the social world.

Kristine and Julie discuss in this episodes the importance of being an educated social media engager and knowing about privacy setting.

If you want to learn more about Facebook's privacy setting, Kristine wrote a blog post about some of the recent changes to the Facebook Data Use Policy. It is just another step in trying to become an educated engager.

This program is unique as it can be taken fully by correspondence. If you are near McMaster University, Syracuse currently has a partnership with McMaster that allows students to take courses at the Hamilton campus.

In order to qualify for the program you need to have a minimum of five years work experience.

However, this is just a reminder that it is important for our young professional listeners to realize it is never too early to plan ahead.

This week, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent revisit the topic of Kristine's new job. As promised Kristine shared her top tips on landing her new job. Of course, they were all tips she got from listening to the podcast. Kristine and Julia get to learn too you know!

Here are some of the tips Kristine shared:

  • Get yourself a visual resume that can be used as a snap shot of who you are. Check out Kristine's visual resume on re.vu/kristinesimpson.
  • Make a Pinterest resume. Why? Becuase Pinterest is awesome. And, Pinterest allows you to tell a visual story of who you are and what you will bring to the job. Check out Kristine's Pinterest resume.
  • And don't forget to ask questions. Kristine asked about five questions at the end of her interview to show her eagerness to work. Julia and Kristine talk about this subject in more detail during episode 20.

Julia then introduces a new segment in our Who to Follow series. This week we profile William Johnson, or @socialeccentric as he is known on Twitter.

Will is a communications, event management and student affairs professional at Carleton University in Ottawa. When he is not in the office, he is busy blogging and tweeting. Will is an eclectic member of the Ottawa Twitter society. He shares everything from local news to restaurant suggestions. For our listeners looking for a job, you can periodically catch Will tweeting about new job opportunities for young professionals.

Word on the street has it that Will may make an appearance on a Young PR Pros episode in the future. So stay tuned.

Happy New Year young PR pros!

We are back at work, school, or whatever it is we do from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. And Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent are also back, well rested and ready to jump in to 2013.

This week we chat about our New Years resolutions.

Julia's resolution is no surprise, if you have been listening to the show we all know how much Julia loves to read. So for 2013 Julia's big resolution is to read 24 books.

Kristine divided her resolutions in two categories: professional and personal. This is a good trick if you have specific goals you want to attain within the company you work for (i.e. get promoted, get more involved in internal communications, etc). Her personal goals include reading the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Series, as well as the Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. Her professional resolutions include goals that will help her advance her career. Kristine sees 2013 as the year of the video and plans on doing a v-log once a month and producing more videos of Young PR Pros guests.

Julia mentions an interesting resolution from 2012: Young PR Pros. In January 2012, Kristine wrote a blog post about starting a podcast. Immediately after, none other than Julia commented on the blog, and the rest is history. So you see, New Years resolutions ARE possible.

Kristine and Julia give young professionals five tips to writing down good resolutions that will help advance your career, just follow the SMART way:

  • S: simple. One resolution is one goal.
  • M: measurable. Make sure you can measure the resolution. You can't measure "be kind in 2013", but you can measure "read 24 books".
  • A: attainable. Don't make a resolution you can't keep.
  • R: relevant. Make the resolutions relevant to your career.
  • T: time-bound. Resolutions are naturally time-bound, to be finished by the end of the year. But, if you want more of a challenge, break you resolutions up and put deadlines on certain aspects of a resolution. For example, if your resolution is to read 24 books, make a secondary resolution to finish two books by the end of January.

This week, Kristine Simpson and Julia Kent revisit a topic discussed a few episodes back about tips and best practices on how to properly leave a job without burning any bridges.

Kristine just started a new job as the manager of public affairs for the Canadian Automobile Association's national office. But, before she got to embark on her new exciting adventure, she needed to do the hardest thing she has ever had to do: quit.

Kristine shares her experience and lessons learned.

Julia then asks Kristine if she is doing anything in particular to prepare for her new job. Kristine expresses the importance of research, getting to know people in the organization and keeping an open mind.
